Avoiding Slip, Trip, and Fall Injuries this Spring

As spring arrives and springtime storms become more prevalent, avoid slips, trips, and falls in wet weather by following these general guidelines.

  • Use handrails when walking or climbing stairs.
  • Wear comfortable, slip-resistant shoes.
  • Stay focused and alert.
  • Put your cell phone away when you’re on the move.
  • Use walkways and dedicated paths of travel.
  • Wipe your feet on a mat when entering a building during wet weather.

Slips, trips and falls tend to be more frequent in rainy or icy weather, when walking on uneven surfaces, when there are cords or items left on the floor, when we’re hurrying, or when we are not paying attention to our surroundings. Any combination of these increases the risk of an injury.

Do your part! Follow proper 5S and good housekeeping procedures.

5S Methodology of Organization

  • Sort – Organize all items and remove any unnecessary items.
  • Set in Order – Every item has a distinct place, and should be put back in its place after use.
  • Shine – Sweep and clean the workspace on a regular basis.
  • Standardize – Develop a schedule to ensure repetition of the first three steps.
  • Sustain – Ensure that this process is maintained and regularly practiced.

Following the 5S method will ensure that your workspace stays a clean, safe work environment.
